Urodynamic tests

This is a test of how well your bladder works.

Most incontinence is caused by a leaky bladder neck and some because of an overactive or irritable bladder. This test will help to assess which it is.

You should drink normally before the test, but come to the clinic with a full bladder. The first test is to get you to pass urine into a special toilet with as full a bladder as possible.

For the next part of the study a small catheter is passed into the bladder, and your bladder is then slowly filled with sterile water to measure pressures.

At the end of the study you will be asked to pass urine into the special toilet again.

For the next 48 hours you should drink 2 litres a day, and pass urine every three hours or earlier. There is a very small risk of infection, so if you feel that you have cystitis, or pain in the bladder or feverish then you must contact the hospital or GP or casualty.
